Vijaypur a tiny Himalayan village, located between Bageshwar and Chaukhori
is known to only a few travellers. Situated at a height of 6750 feet
this sleepy hamlet rests on a ridge overlooking the magnificent Himalayan
range. On a clear day the place offers one of the most breathtaking
views of the entire range from Chaukhamba, Neel Kanth, Hathi Parvat,
Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, to Panchchuli and Appi (Annapurna)
peaks. Tea gardens carpet the slopes of Vijaypur while the surrounding
ridge is completely covered by rows and rows of pine.
Jageshwar: Counted among the 12 Jyotirlingas in the country, Jageshwar lies in a beautiful narrow valley hedged by monarch-sized, ancient deodars. Of the over 100 small and large shrines of this complex, the three outstanding ones in terms of sculpture are dedicated to Jageshwar, Mrityunjaya and Pushtidevi. There is a small museum where statues of artistic value, removed from the various shrines, have been preserved by the archaeological department. A 3 km trek from Jageshwar leads to Vriddha Jageshwar. This is regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva prior to his manifesting himself as Jageshwar. This site commands a magnificent view of the Himalayas. The lofty-tower type isolated shrine of Dandeshwar is 1Km short of the actual temple complex.
Overnight stay in Wayfarer Retreat, this is a small complex of aesthetically constructed hill cottages. Intended as an ideal stop over for the weary traveller the Retreat offers nature at its unadulterated best. Starting from watching the sunrise on Nanda Kot, to trekking through the forest to the musk deer farm, to driving to Patal Bhubaneshwar for a rare surreal experience - everything around the Retreat can remain etched in one's memory forever.
Day
07: Vijaypur-Munsyari
Meals: breakfast & dinner
Drive to Munsyari in the morning (8 hours) visiting Patal Bubhaneshwar
en route.
Munsyari
is hidden away amongst the mountains in India's border district of
Pithoragarh at a height of 7000 feet this Himalayan settlement is
probably the closest you can get to experiencing the Greater Himalayas
from hand shaking distance. At Munsyari you have the majestic Panch
Chulli peak towering all of 22600 feet right in front of you.
This last outpost in Kumaon is the gateway to the famous Milam and
Ralam glaciers. It is also your only access to one of India's highest
mountain - Nanda Devi East (7434 mts).
The Munsiyari valley is dotted by several beautifully laidout hamlets
with a cultural lifestyle steeped in traditional Hinduism. Almost
every village, populated by a cross section of Indo-Tibetan tribals
called Bhotias, is rich with handicrafts: hand woven woollen carpets,
pashmina shawls and sheep wool blankets. Traditional folk dances like
the Jhora, Cholia and Chhapeili are great to watch.
Overnight stay in Wayfarer Mountain Resort which is set along a terraced
ridge which is around sixty feet above the motorable road. Flowing
next to the resort is a waterfall. Right in front is the Panch Chulli
range. The valley below is green bursting with rhododendrons. The
setting is near perfect for spending a few days amidst nature.
Day visits
to Darkot village, Jimi Ghat waterfall, Goriganga river, Maheshwari
Kund are worth trying. For people in search of high adventure Munsyari
is the base camp for some of the best high altitude treks.
From April to June the day temperature is an average of 20oC while
temperature at night is around 10oC. The early morning and late evening
views of the Panch Chulli peaks are usually good. July and August
are the peak monsoon months when getting to Munsyari becomes difficult.
By mid-September the weather settles down, the views are excellent.
By mid December the entire area is covered with a blanket of snow.
This is a splendid time to get to Munsyari.
