Uttarakhand extends from 28º 43' N to 31º 27' N longitude and 77º 34' East to 81º 02' E latitude, surrounding by Nepal in the East, China in the North, Himachal Pradesh in the west and U.P. in the South. After Independence this Tehri princely state was merged into Uttar Pradesh state and became the 27th state of the Republic of India on November 9, 2000. The State is divided into two zones Kumaon and Garhwal.
The word Uttarakhand is composed of two words, "uttar" meaning "north" and "aanchal" meaning "blessings." The land of “Devbhumi" or "the land of god," nourishes a diverse and rich culture and monuments of historical importance.
The State is also renowned for its different exotic flora and fauna. It has a perfect location for eco-tourism and as well as wildlife tourism. Uttarakhand is world-famous for its Corbett National Park. Its other important sanctuaries are, Rajaji National Park, Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and Nandadevi National Park.
