Taj Mahal Tour

seventh wonder in world
Agra is home to one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal. This monument to love was built by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan some 350 years ago to mark his wife Noorjehan's grave.

So besotted was he with her beauty that he promised to build a monument that would be the most beautiful in the world. The Taj took 20,000 craftsmen about 20 years to build. It is said that the emperor had their hands cut off afterward to prevent them from building another Taj.

The Taj overshadows two other magnificent monuments - the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikhri.

The fort is a few minutes' drive from the Taj and is a spectacular, built largely of red sandstone, has some lovely carvings. Particularly touching is the room where Shah Jahan spent his last years, a prisoner of his son Jahangir, looking out through a lattice-work grill at the Taj Mahal. He was to be buried with him wife in the basement of the Taj.

mosque's in taj mahalFatehpur Sikhri is half an hour's drive from the Agra. This was for a short while the capital of Moghul India, again built by Shah Jahan. The entire structure is made of red sandstone and intricately carved. There is a platform once surrounded by water, where the legendary poet and singer Tansen sang. It is said that when he sang the raag deepak, the evening lamps would be lit by themselves.
