BATESHWAR
TEMPLES
The
ancient temple complex at Bateshwar
is located on a crescent curve
on the river Yamuna 8 km from
the Chambal Safari Lodge, with
more than a hundred temples built
over the ages dedicated to the
Hindu God Shiva. The area is also
said to be the birthplace of Lord
Krishna's mother, and has several
interesting myths and legends
associated with it. The open areas
around the temple complex play
host to an annual animal fair,
whose original too are believed
to stretch into antiquity. The
fair is amongst the largest of
its mind in Northern India , but
relatively little known on the
tourist circuit. The fair, in
early November (the dates depends
on the lunar calendar, and vary
from year to year) coincides with
the most auspicious period for
praying at the temples and is
an important fixture for saints,
sadhus, tradesmen and villagers
alike.
The
temples are all lined along the
river Yamuna front, and several
have ghats (steps) leading down
to the water. The ravines surrounding
the river are home to a number
of sadhus, who have carved out
little caves and temples from
the mud walls. The river Yamuna
and its ravines are also home
to a number of resident and migratory
birds that may be seen whilst
taking a walk along the temples,
or by heading off on the many
trails in the ravines.
